As the 2020 class of Comfort Dog Project dogs and guardians prepare for their final certification testing and graduation at the end of this month, we invited program graduates to participate in a special day of mentoring. Dog-guardian teams from Koro and Pece competed to be selected among the top 6 in each area. Those top teams were invited to a special day at BIG FIX Uganda which involved mentoring of the current project guardians and sharing stories.
The demonstration participants had graduated from the Comfort Dog Project training program between 2015 and 2019. BIG FIX Uganda makes a lifetime commitment to all dogs and guardians in our program. This includes the opportunity to earn money by working as mentors, community educators, and field clinic staff. In an economy where few opportunities to earn income exist, these opportunities can sometimes mean the difference between having food to eat and going hungry. All guardians who participated in the demonstrations received compensation, lunch, and an opportunity to compete for cash prizes for the top performances.
Among the top performers from this year's event were Lucy and her Comfort Dog Sadik, from the 2015 class. Lucy and Sadik have served a members of the school education team and Lucy presently serves as an assistant dog trainer for BIG FIX. Although Sadik has developed inoperable vision impairment and it is believed that his vision is now very limited, you will be amazed to watch how well he and Lucy communicate with each other.
