While the pandemic has quieted many of the world’s activities, the construction of BIG FIX Uganda’s new kennel building is underway with a lot of excitement.
Our amazing team has been struggling to care for the many animals who come to us with a kennel building which has had its integrity challenged by years of hard use. It was determined during 2019 that the best way for us to move forward in our development is to convert our existing kennel building into an isolation treatment unit for infectious diseases and to build a new kennel to house other dogs. Our improvements will also include construction of a cattery building.
BIG FIX Uganda’s home is a beautiful 4+ acre compound we purchased in 2015 near Gulu. The compound houses our hospital, our guest house (where we invite you to visit!), our existing kennel, our Comfort Dog Project roundhouse, and our dog training yard. We also have more than half of the property under cultivation and grow our own food, including maize, carrots, sweet potatoes, rice, and French beans, used to help feed our staff and to cook food for all the animals in our care. We have also planted more than 50 trees, including many native fruits.
The construction of the new kennel building is being done in full compliance with Uganda’s regulations regarding COVID-19 preventative measures and the project is helping to feed many, many families in the area as those who are working are now able to buy food. In accordance with the distancing measures, the contractor is housing the construction workers on a parcel adjacent to BIG FIX and providing meals to them.
We are so grateful to the many hands around the world who have joined together to contribute to the construction of this building. The kennel building will have 12 individual kennel rooms, each large enough to house several dogs, and there are floor drains in each room. The building features a secured wall perimeter and three separate turn out areas for dogs to play, without leaving the building. We will also have a “real life room” which will be set up like a house interior, so that dogs can become accustomed to being around people in a home setting, and have an alternative place to relax outside of their kennel rooms.
As the only organization in the entire Northern Uganda region which provides veterinary hospital and sheltering/rescue services, the construction of this building will have a long-term impact on the health and well-being of dogs in this vast area.
