The Comfort Dog Project now has a new home, thanks to our donors! This is a traditional Acholi Roundhouse. The houses are beautiful pieces of art which have been used by centuries by the Acholi people. They stay remarkably cool during the hot dry season and the grass-thatched roofs provide many years of protection from the rain and elements.
In the past, guardians in need of individual counseling received that counseling under the mango tree near BIG FIX's gate. Now, the guardians and their dogs can be welcomed into a proper home with greater privacy. We decided to build Comfort Dog Project a traditional roundhouse instead of a more modern structure so that people would feel immediately at home and comfortable.
After the world moves beyond the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will engage the Comfort Dog Project guardians in painting the exterior of the roundhouse, to adorn it with colorful image of people playing and celebrating with their dogs. We also plan to commission local women to sew dog beds so our Comfort Dogs will themselves be comforted while inside.
The roundhouse is located just a few steps from our dog training yard, and we've planted a Moringa tree nearby to create shade and serenity in the area.
We are very grateful for our enterprising Executive Assistant at BIG FIX, Honest, who took a lead role in constructing the roundhouse. The estimates we obtained for building exceeded our budget and Honest decided we could save a lot of money by hiring the best builders in our own village. This not only created work opportunities for some of the men and women in our village, it created a sense of pride in the building process.
And, we made our donor dollars go as far as possible in creating this much needed addition to the BIG FIX compound. In total, the labor and materials cost around $1,500 USD and we would have spent an additional $500 or more, if not for Honest's determination and commitment to making our limited resources go as far as possible. Thanks to you all for your help!
