Every year, we work in 40 of the highest rabies risk areas to provide free rabies vaccinations and deworming. Animals in need of more intensive care are transported to our hospital for admission.
Veterinary services would otherwise not be available to the animals in these villages. An average of 185 animals are treated at each of these village clinics.
Our Field Educators are on site to provide guidance on how to be a Great Animal Guardian and we help guardians to wash and groom their dogs.
In remote areas, we provide spay/neuter surgeries in the village. In locations within one hour of our hospital, we make appointments for animals to be picked up at their homes and transported to our hospital, where we can provide better conditions for surgery and recovery.
Rabies Prevention and Education
Rabies is a very real and deadly threat in northern Uganda. Though there are no reliable statistics on the number of people killed each year by rabies, most people know someone who has died from this completely preventable disease. Most of the victims are children attacked by unvaccinated dogs.
The BIG FIX Uganda utilizes a Rabies Tracker App which was gifted to us by Global Alliance for Rabies Control. Since February 2022, all vaccinations and rabies outbreaks have been documented with GPS coordinates on the Rabies Tracker, enabling us to better respond to outbreaks. We work very closely with the local governments to protect people and animals when suspected rabies cases are reported. The BIG FIX Emergency Rabies Response Team responds to and investigates rabies reports and works to ensure that any exposed animals and people receive post-exposure treatment and vaccinations.
The BIG FIX Uganda is the 2018 recipient of the WORLD RABIES DAY AWARD FOR SUB-SAHARA AFRICA (PARACON) and our Education Manager received the 2021 Education Champion award.
The World Rabies Day awards are given by a committee including individuals from the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), Center for Disease Control, MSD Animal Health, and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control.
We are members of the United Against Rabies Forum.
If you’d like to know more about rabies we have a rabies resources page with more information.
World Rabies Day 28 September 2023
Free Rabies Vaccinations
in Amuru District, Uganda
(2 sites: Pabbo Center and Jengari)
We believe the best way for us to acknowledge World Rabies Day is to again provide free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats in Amuru District on 28 September 2023. Big Fix Uganda will work in proud cooperation with the Amuru District Veterinary Officer and local leaders to bring free rabies vaccinations to two sites: Pabbo Town Council and Jengari, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Free spay/neuter surgeries will also be provided on a first-come, first-served basis at the Pabbo Town Council site only. Our field educators will be on hand to help you to groom and wash your dogs and provide help with caring for your dogs and cats.
Please bring your dog with a safe neck restraint - such as a piece of rope - and please do not use wire or chains around your dog's neck. These can cause serious injury and even death.
To date, The BIG FIX has vaccinated over 93,000 dogs against rabies.
Upcoming events.
Big Fix Uganda hold a range of field clinics, we take part in World Rabies day and of course in Global Awareness days that relate to our work. Here you can keep track of what we are involved in - hope to see you soon!
